what is the teacher’s goal?

please let me spend a moment on this question…

  • is it to prepare the student for a life of performing?

  • is it to impress an audience?

  • or has it become something else?

time it takes to read this page, including pictures: 1 minute, 11 seconds.

When i was a beginning student, my only goals were to perfect the movements and to be able to articulate, with the body, phrases in the music.

With time there were whirlwinds of performances.

Since 2020 (it now being 2024!) the personal desire for that, has become less so. does this make teaching or learning dance any less significant?

No.

It’s a joy, through dance, to realize our design.

In our day-to-day movements, and in certain areas of work, this is revealed, but never so much as in dance or athletics (or in withchild and birth). In dance, the body becomes more expressive, its functional abilities are augmented, so, at the same time, through its efforts in studying movement, a more helpful body is built.

The body has already demonstrated its adaptability—anyone who’s suffered an injury has experienced this. in recovering from the injury, it is clear that the body adjusts, and, as it has had to compensate for the injury (which comes more naturally to someone trained in dance), two things happen: the dancer becomes more capable, and, more importantly: more empathetic. this is where the more helpful body is able to transfer what was studied for the joy of movement, or for artistic expression, into the ability to clearly and specifically assist other persons.

So, it’s true both early on, and through all the stages of dance, it infuses all areas of life.
